Spring Planting Tips for a Healthy, Thriving Landscape

Apr 3, 2026

Spring is the perfect time to refresh your yard and set your landscape up for success. Whether you’re filling in bare spots or starting a brand-new garden, using proper planting techniques can make a major difference in how your plants establish and grow.

At Back to Nature Landscaping & Construction, we believe that great landscapes start with strong foundations—and that begins with how you plant.

Why Proper Spring Planting Matters

Healthy planting practices help your plants:

  • Establish stronger root systems
  • Adapt to native soil conditions
  • Require less maintenance over time
  • Thrive through the heat of summer

By getting it right in the spring, you’re setting your landscape up for long-term success.

Start with Proper Planting Technique

When planting, always dig your hole wider—not deeper—than the root ball.

  • The top of the root ball should sit level with or slightly above the surrounding soil
  • Planting too deep can restrict oxygen and stress roots
  • A wider hole allows roots to spread and establish more easily

This simple step is one of the most important factors in plant health.

Be Mindful with Soil Amendments

It’s common to want to improve your soil, but over-amending can actually hurt plant growth.

  • Mix no more than 20% compost or amendment into your existing soil
  • Too much amendment can cause roots to stay confined instead of spreading
  • Native soil helps plants adapt to real conditions in your yard

Balance is key when improving soil conditions.

Firm the Soil—Don’t Over-Compact

After placing your plant:

  • Gently firm the soil with your hands to remove air pockets
  • Avoid pressing down with your feet

Over-compacting soil reduces airflow and water movement, which can limit root development. The goal is firm, supportive soil—not dense, packed ground.

Avoid Planting in Wet Soil

Timing matters just as much as technique.

  • Avoid working in overly wet soil, especially clay
  • Wet soil compacts easily and can create long-term drainage issues
  • Aim for soil that is slightly moist but not saturated

This helps protect soil structure and encourages healthy root growth.

Water Consistently for Strong Establishment

New plants need steady moisture to thrive.

  • Aim for about 1 inch of water per week (rainfall or irrigation)
  • Use a simple method like a tuna can to measure sprinkler output
  • Water deeply and consistently rather than lightly and frequently

For convenience, consider adding a timer to your outdoor spigot to maintain a consistent schedule.
